Platted at 'The Summit' of the Rail Line
Minooka was established in 1852 when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad laid track from Chicago to Ottawa through the area; railroad surveyor Ransom Gardner purchased 500 acres in the northeast corner of Grundy County and platted the town. Railroad workers called the site 'the summit' because it was the highest point along the line. Early settler Dolly Smith named the town Minooka, from a Potawatomi word meaning 'good land' or 'high place,' and George Comerford served as the town's first railroad agent; Minooka Methodist Episcopal Church organized in 1856 and St. Mary's Church in 1862, and the village was incorporated in 1869.
What High Ground Does -- and Doesn't -- Do for a Basement
Sitting at the literal high point of a rail line has real drainage advantages: water sheds away from a summit faster than it does from low ground. But high ground doesn't cancel out the region's broader hydrology -- Minooka still sits within Will County's Des Plaines River watershed, and fast-draining runoff from higher ground has to go somewhere, often concentrating in the drainage paths and sewer lines that carry it toward lower-lying areas. A basement can still take on water at a high point if grading, gutters, or an aging sewer connection are directing that runoff back toward the house instead of away from it.
