From Gouger Crossing to a Railroad Town Called Tracey
New Lenox traces to a settlement in the late 1820s near 'Gouger crossing,' at what is now Route 30 and Gouger Road, initially known as VanHorne Point; more farmers arrived through the 1830s. New Lenox Township was established when Will County itself was created in 1852, the same year the Chicago & Rock Island Railroad was built through Frankfort, New Lenox, and Joliet townships. The community was first named 'Tracey,' after the railroad's general superintendent, before being renamed New Lenox at his own request, after the township -- itself named for Lenox, New York. The Village of New Lenox was officially organized and incorporated on October 4, 1946.
Rail-Era Grading and Where Water Still Collects
Railroad construction through New Lenox Township in 1852 required its own grading and culvert work to carry water under the tracks, and much of that rail-era drainage pattern still underlies how the area sheds water today. New Lenox sits within Will County's stretch of the Des Plaines River watershed, where regional stormwater planning identifies basement flooding and sewer backup, rather than visible surface ponding, as the common result when that older drainage is overwhelmed.
