A Fishing Village Called Troy, Built on the Des Plaines River
Shorewood began as a small fishing and resort community known as 'Troy' on the Des Plaines River. Early settler William Grinton built a three-story, water-powered flour mill there in 1845, and the mill became the nucleus of the settlement that grew up around it. Residents later formed the Shorewood Beach Improvement Association in 1931, and through the 1940s the area shifted from a collection of summer beach cottages into a year-round community; the village was formally incorporated on November 27, 1957, with 177 ballots cast and a population of 358 -- in part to regulate the trailers that had begun lining the riverfront.
What Living on the River Means for a Basement
A settlement built around a water-powered mill was, by definition, built close to the river -- and that proximity hasn't gone away just because Shorewood grew from 1,749 residents in 1970 to 7,686 by 2000 along I-55 and I-80. Homes nearer the Des Plaines River corridor tend to sit closer to a higher, more seasonally variable water table than homes set back from it, and Will County's own stormwater planning identifies basement flooding and sewer backup -- not surface ponding -- as the typical way that shows up in a house.
